Earlier today I was working on a post about Don Blount's latest offering (which will probably be up tomorrow, sorry for the slacking) about riding the late night bus and came across something curious. The column can be found here, but occasionally, links older than a day do not show up on the main news page (if at all) so I have to use the Google Advanced Search options and just enter an exceprt of the article I'm looking for. Yes, even with the improvements the Record's site is a bear to navigate. Not the animal kind, the big gay hairy dude kind.
Anyways, out of habit I did that with this column. I entered a passage from his column and Google spit back this. Now, one should note I'm using site search, so the only website that should show up should be Recordnet.com. Yet Google kicks back that site and only that site. Other stories show up fine, but Blount's continues to show up only on this TMCnews site. It appears to be a word for word reproduction, and the column is also on Recordnet.com so theoretically it should show up under the Record's site on Google, but it don't.
So does this mean Google is trying to deny the rest of the world the musings of Don Blount? I sure hope not, that would be mean. Almost as mean as not loaning out your cell phone. But, as usual with these things, it leaves us asking the age old quesiton, what the fuck Recordnet?

Commenter Theater with the Recordnet.com forums!
I read about the layoffs while doing the Quick Links Friday morning. My first thought? "The comments on this story are going to be epic." And sure enough, they were! There's biased cops! There's a false sense of entitlement! There's exaggerations of our safety! And blatant ignorance as to how budgets work! Conspiracy theories!
As of posting time there were 157 comments on the Friday online version of the story. The full story posting right now has 94 comments. Totaling 251 on the layoffs alone. Half of which are all by the same people, all of which are hilarious and slightly sad.
A few of our favorites are below. We should note this is just from the first 5 or 6 pages of the original Friday post that we linked to. We'll being you more hilariousness throughout the week as we find it. We haven't gotten to the part where the Save Stockton guy shows up. We're looking forward to it.
As usual, quotes in bold. Our clever remarks, not bold. Consider everything sic'd and consider the fact that these are message board comments. Making fun of them is really like making fun of the mentally handicapped. Which is a past time we've enjoyed for many years.

Yeah. Thing is, those other, less necessary entities all took their budget cuts back in fall of last year. PD refused the budget cuts. So I guess what we're trying to say is this is the back up plan.

We're about a month into the term of a Council that we knew would have to make these tough decisions. Again, this council is a month old, and we knew these problems were going to arise. They did not cause these problems, they were elected to deal with them. We're not ones to defend the City Council too much, but none of this is the current City Council's fault. It was the last one's (and even then, kinda not really). And we've already voted them out of office. Like months ago. So ummm, ok. Done.
But then of course, common sense (ok, common sensish) rears it's ugly head.

"SPOA is using fear to try to achieve a 15% pay raise. The City tried to work a deal and the Cops don't care. The City has to do what the SPD "Interim" Chief or SPOA won't do, CUT COST. The SFD and Firefighters Union made their cuts and pay raise deferrments, as well as reduction in staff. The SPD and its union refuses to acknowledge the truth about this economy and make some real cuts. They are willing to lose positions than take a personal financial cut."
And, let's face it, this is a message board on the internet. We can't let that stand!

Oh I see what they did there. Clever. So the person referring to previous news stories about budget cuts is in a bubble. And the guys claiming Stockton's crime is through the roof even though last year we had the lowest number of homicides since the 70s are the sane ones. Makes total sense.

No, just no. The problem is that the city didn't get enough revenue through sales taxes, property taxes, and other taxes. The problem isn't a misspending of tax dollars, it's that there aren't enough tax dollars. It's all about projections and estimates. The city projected they'd have more revenue and spent accordingly, then when the economy went to shit they had to backtrack and realized they had less money than they thought they were going to get. So they have to reconcile that with the books. It's like when you buy a computer or a nice flat screen using credit knowing that you earn enough money to make the monthly payments, only then your boss cuts your hours in half 2 months later and now you're stuck making monthly payments on something you can't afford. What happens? You can either refinance, or it gets repo'd. Stockton bought a bunch of police officers and the economy cratered. They offered a chance to refinance, PD said no. So they got repo'd. That doesn't mean you get a check for the money paid for the couple months you could afford it, you're just shit out of luck. That money's spent and gone.
We'll bring you more later in the week. We haven't even touched on the hilarious Police Department/Fire Department feud where the police officers seem to forget that SFD went through almost the same thing a few months ago when the city tried to shut down a station. Plus, like I said, we're only like 6 pages in to one of the 2 threads. We'll bring you other nuggets of comedy gold as we find them.
But before we go, I want to leave you with my personal favorite.

The "my" in myRecord apparently stands for "my press release collection"
OK, confession time. I didn't really read a physical copy of the Record yesterday. I just skimmed the website real quick, which isn't my preferred method of finding shit to write about but I didn't have any quarters on me when I was near a newsstand and I was way too lazy to head to a store to buy one. I got my grubby little hands on a copy today (of yesterday's and today's papers), and for once I'm glad I did. Why? The Record is blessing us with a preview of myRecord!
Undoubtedly you're wondering "What the fuck is myRecord?" Well, the Record announced a little while ago that it was revamping it's website. Ok, I wish they were revamping the entire website. Really it's just a revamp of the previously useless "interactive" tab so it includes more user-generated content (a great idea, wish we'd thought of it. Oh wait, we did.)
Before the closest recordnet.com got to UGC was reader-submitted photos. Those are still around, but now they want you to send backstories with them and apparently they'll be printed on the bottom half of the LENS section or something. Apparently that's the sole place to find them as the myRecord web-section doesn't seem to have any of the stories that have appeared in the preview so far (stories in the paper that are difficult to find on the website? It must be on recordnet.com!). You can also submit events and browse the events calendar for upcoming shit.
Wait a minute, opportunities for aspiring local writers, events calendar, Ian Hill in charge, this all sounds vaguely fucking familiar. If I didn't know better I'd say it sounds like the Record is folding 209Vibe into it's website in an attempt to absorb it's traffic. Although, the writers for 209Vibe actually got paid. As far as we can tell myRecord is just offering you a chance to get published, which is very craigslisty of them.
Of course when you open up publishing possibilities to just any ol' yahoo with a digital camera and an e-mail account you're going to get a lot of press releases about local events. You know, like both "articles" in today's preview. One of them is actually the minutes from a motorcycle club meeting. Riveting stuff ain't it? (Note to Fitzy: the motorcycle club met at Taste of Brittany because, as the picture shows, the members of the club are the Record's key demographic. Old white people. Actual bikers wouldn't be caught dead there.) (Wait, how the fuck did he find that story on the website? Is my computer blocking some sort of unneeded fancy gadget they're using to list the story when regular ol' html would do just fine? And why is it under the "news" tab in that link when the URL clearly says "interact"? Why can't anything on recordnet make some fucking sense!? At least it links to the other myRecord stories in the linkbacks section. Man, this thing is just oozing with our suggestions.)
Perhaps the most interesting part of these stories/ads is the bylines. Those motorcycle club minutes? "By the Port Stockton Motorcycle Club". That's right, apparently the entire club wrote it. We're not saying that that's out of the realm of possibility, most of these posts are a collaborative effort. But then, you know, one of us has to actually write them. Does this mean we can write for myRecord and turn it in as "Reclaiming the Title" in hopes of getting free advertising? Don't worry, being journonerds we wouldn't write about ourselves due to obvious conflict of interest issues. Not that myRecord seems all too concerned about conflicts of interest. All 3 stories that have appeared in the preview have been written by the groups they're about.
Hopefully that will change now that people know myRecord is accepting stories. When we suggested the Record try and include more user-generated content, press releases that are normally featured in the Local section wasn't really what we had in mind. Sadly, if myRecord is going to feature daily user-generated stories as they claim they will, it will probably feature more of these kind of useless boring stories which are really just pictures with extended captions. Because, and you can trust us on this one, writing daily stories for free is kind of tough. But if anybody wants to give it a shot, our site might be the better option. We'll give you lots of space to write more than a paragraph and we won't even require a photo to go with it. We do have a staunch "No articles about events/groups you're directly a part of" rule though. That's right, RTT has higher journalistic standards than the Record. Surprised? Me neither.

Breaking News: The Record to eliminate 209Vibe, castrate Ian Hill
(Update and bump to the top because fuck it, this is end of the day news: If you didn't believe us before, Ian Hill made the official announcement on 209Vibe.com about an hour ago.)
We don't get to much actual news to break to you guys but when we do, it's usually a doozie. And this is one hell of a doozie.
Effective after next month 209Vibe is no more. Everything. 209Vibe.com, the print edition, even Ian Hill is being moved from LENS to the newsroom.
We should probably note that this isn't based on rumor, it's been confirmed by a couple of sources. The Record is blaming that wonderful catchall the economy. Which is kind of hard to swallow considering we know from personal experience it costs jack shit to maintain a website.
We'll try and get more information when we can, but we can't state enough how much of a blow this is to the local arts scene that just caught a huge break with the Plea for Peace Center.
Leave it to the Record to eliminate their best feature. Fuck.

Quick Links for Dec. 9th
Teen Slave makes his way back into the news today after a couple day break. Nothing really new is revealed, his non-aunt Caren Ramirez just made her first court appearance. The party pooper judge issued a gag order on talking to the media so we'll have to wait a while for any more new information. Duke did happen to drive by Tennis Lane in Tracy last week and remarked at how tall the wall between the house and InShape was, not to mention the kid still had to run across the tennis courts to get to the actual gym.
We said it last week but we'll say it again, go to Delta and you'll magically start mismanaging money. Delta Trustee Maria Serna resigned yesterday right before she plead no contest for milking Delta for even more cash. Here's a hilarious quote from Serna's resignation letter via the Record's story, "On the advice of my physician, I can no longer fulfill my obligations with the college, and due to personal reasons, I will be having this resignation effective immediately." I always consult my doctor before resigning in disgrace over embezzlement charges too. The fact that she had past problems with reimbursements makes us question how she could have gotten reelected. It also makes us again wonder how Raul Rodriguez still has his job. How many more scandals need to happen under his watch before enough is efuckingnough? Also, how dare she bring shame to the Serna name. Her brother, awesome former Sac Mayor Joe Serna (the only person to ever have the words "awesome" and "Sacramento mayor" associated with them), is probably rolling in his grave right now.

Degenerate gamblers everywhere rejoice! The horse races are back to June. The September dates just didn't pan out, and by "didn't pan out" we mean they were a colossal fucking failure. Kind of like we knew they were going to be.
Census figures came out today for those of you who like numbers. Nothing inherently shocking is revealed. Although I did miss the fertility question on my census sheet apparently.
Alright, we'll admit, it is kind of cool that an election was won by 3 votes.
We wanted to link to the art roundup that pimped the art show featuring work by Disney animator Mel Shaw but of course something that's on the front page of the LENS section of the Record can't be on the front page of the LENS section of recordnet.com. The show's at JLI on Pershing and runs Friday through Sunday. Duke claims to have seen Shaw's private studio before and says there's a lot of great work. We're not really the artsy type, but trust us this will be a good show.
Speaking of the art community, Plea for Peace! I totally missed this article that apparently ran in Friday's Record. But after reading it, I couldn't shake the feeling that it seemed oddly familiar. Oh yeah, it's just like this 209Vibe cover story except minus all the hilarious quotes from local artists calling out the city for it's long held anti-music stance. My favorite quote being from Hey Manna!'s Daniel Guiterrez, "Every time anybody wants to do something for the Stockton music scene, it gets bashed into the ground." Sounds about right. And while we're here, how about a Plea for Peace permit hearing reminder? (Pulled, as always, from MySpace)

Degenerate gamblers everywhere rejoice! The horse races are back to June. The September dates just didn't pan out, and by "didn't pan out" we mean they were a colossal fucking failure. Kind of like we knew they were going to be.
Census figures came out today for those of you who like numbers. Nothing inherently shocking is revealed. Although I did miss the fertility question on my census sheet apparently.
Alright, we'll admit, it is kind of cool that an election was won by 3 votes.
We wanted to link to the art roundup that pimped the art show featuring work by Disney animator Mel Shaw but of course something that's on the front page of the LENS section of the Record can't be on the front page of the LENS section of recordnet.com. The show's at JLI on Pershing and runs Friday through Sunday. Duke claims to have seen Shaw's private studio before and says there's a lot of great work. We're not really the artsy type, but trust us this will be a good show.
Speaking of the art community, Plea for Peace! I totally missed this article that apparently ran in Friday's Record. But after reading it, I couldn't shake the feeling that it seemed oddly familiar. Oh yeah, it's just like this 209Vibe cover story except minus all the hilarious quotes from local artists calling out the city for it's long held anti-music stance. My favorite quote being from Hey Manna!'s Daniel Guiterrez, "Every time anybody wants to do something for the Stockton music scene, it gets bashed into the ground." Sounds about right. And while we're here, how about a Plea for Peace permit hearing reminder? (Pulled, as always, from MySpace)

Well, fuck. (Update)
Sure, now you update the story. Less than a half hour after I posted today's Quick Links the Record updated their story about Teen Slave's escape and the capture of his aunt. It appears both the Record and the Chronicle were right, the Chronicle was just righter and more thorough in tracking down quotes. The kid did go for a ride in a van, probably where he picked up the dropped padlock key, then escaped over the back wall once they got home.
Sure, they took their sweet time, but they finally got the correct escape story up. Which, considering it's a story about an escape, is kind of sad. Still no quotes from neighbors or family members though. I guess "Hi, I'm Keith Reid from the Record" doesn't carry the gravitas that a "Hi, SF Chronicle, do you have a minute?" phone call does. We can only imagine the uphill battle the Tracy Press faces.

Update on Plea for Peace Center
So it's past 5pm, anybody wondering what's happening with Middagh's campaign to get the proper permits for the Plea for Peace Center? Two... individuals (restraintrestraintrestraint) wrote letters requesting arbitration or something.

"I will have a petition at all shows to encourage the Community Development to issue the permits needed to open the Plea for Peace Center. Two letters were written requesting a hearing set for Thursday December 11th at 6pm. I have until November 15th to get both parties to write new letters recalling their original letter. If that happens permits will be issued and we can move forward. If not the hearing will be held and a decision to give us (or not) the permits will be made. I hope that we can resolve this matter without it going to a hearing, just in case I am going to do everything I can to sway the committee in our favor. Timmo and Liz from Caffien Den both have copies of the petition. If you would like to help get signitures let me know.

Quick Links for 10/6
You know that fatal casino bus crash that happened yesterday? You'll never guess where the driver was from. Surprise! He was on something! In other news, the sun rose this morning.
Just when you thought you couldn't get enough bickering over shit that's probably going to be revised in 15 years anyway, San Joaquin County has decided it's time to take a look at their general plan. Which actually brings up the question, shouldn't this be the plan that decides whether or not Stockton can build east of 99 in Morada?
Something we forgot to mention in the previous post (besides the fact that we're kinda busy, so apologies for not bringing our A game today) is the fact that links to related posts are back! Woooo! Next thing you know they'll be doing it on stories that aren't a good 3 months past relevancy.
Lodi's close to giving the cricket players they once hassled for being toodark loud a place to call home. And yet Stockton continues to deny our requests for a permanent home for our Professional Kickball League.
And finally, what a slut.

WTF recordnet?
The erudite post and the post before it (which was some other boring police post) have been removed for no discernable reason. (Unless those $10 words Burkin was using were insults, but we looked them up, they weren't.) How dare you remove posts we reference on this awesome site. Although we ask again, what the hell was so bad in those posts that they needed to be removed? Should we not be savoring a crimeless day? Shame on us for enjoying peace.
